Holden Torana TA
In March 1974, Holden introduced the stop gap Torana TA. Holden had ceased producing the Torana LJ, and it required a market filler until the production of the upcoming TX Gemini began. The Torana TA filled Holden’s light car opening until that time.
The Torana LJ was replaced in ’74 by the Torana LH – available only in a four door, 6 cylinder option. Most Australians preferred the 6 cylinder model Torana, however, the 4 cylinder was enough of a seller that Holden could not afford to ignore the market. Therefore, they made some minor alterations to the 4 cylinder LJ to produce the limited TA. The Torana TA was sold alongside the Torana LH until the production began on the TX Gemini, to ensure the 4 cylinder market was continuously covered.
The Torana TA was available only as a 4 cylinder model. Its sheet metal body was duplicated from the 4 cylinder LJ vehicles. Available as both a two door and a four door model, the door options depended once again upon the level of trim purchased.
Torana base trim was available only in the two door option. The Torana Deluxe trim option was available as both a two door option and a four door option. The Deluxe offered full carpets, trimmed bucket seats, chrome wheel trim rings, and a push button radio.
On all models, the engine was 1300cc OHV as standard. The Deluxe version offered an upgrade to a 1760cc OHC engine. The Trimatic auto was also available under the Deluxe model with either engine option. The body side moldings, similar to the Torana HJ, had PVC inserts on the Deluxe version only.
Other minor features of the TA included the standard internal cable operated bonnet release, the LJ Torana 6 cylinder model alternator, 45.5 liter fuel tank, and an increased compression ratio 1300cc engine (compared to the LJ).
The price of the four door Torana TA Deluxe was $2980. For the Torana 1300, one only needed to fork out $2580. Their release was limited to just one year – in March 1975, Holden finally released the TX Gemini as their premier small car option.
All up, the production of the TA Torana reached only 11,304. Of course, it was produced simply to fill the gap until the TX Gemini was offered for sale.
