The VB Commodore was released in November 1978, with the wagon being released in August 1979. It was based on the Opel Rekord / Commodore C.

The base level Commodore came with the 2.8L and 4-speed manual as standard. Featured body colour tail panel, silver finish on instrument surround, and basic vinyl trim. Options included the 3.3L and 4.2L engines, Tri-Matic auto, corded cloth interior, power steering and air conditioning. There were also two option packs, the 3.3 European Pack and 4.2 Sport Pack on manuals only, which brought full instrumentation, four wheel discs, alloy wheels and headlight washer/wipers.
The Commodore SL came with the 3.3L and Tri-Matic as standard. Featured vertical accent bars on the grill, silver tail panel, bright door mouldings, plusher interior trim and carpet, rosewood dash finish, extra gauges, twin exterior mirrors, chrome wheeltrim rings, variable intermittent speed wipers, rear centre armrest and inertia reel seatbelts for the outer rear passengers. It had similar options to the base model.
The Commodore SL/E came with 4.2L V8 and Tri-Matic as standard. Featured blacked out grill, headlight wiper/washers, extended rear bumpers, 15-inch alloy wheels, black door frames and tail panel, chrome exhaust, velour trim and cut pile carpet, reading lights, tachometer, burr walnut dash, four discs, power steering, air conditioning and a Eurovox stereo radio cassette player with electric aerial. Options included the 5.0L V8 with Turbo-Hydramatic 350 or 400 transmission, and central locking.
All V8's came with power steering. On the wagon, there was no 15-inch alloy wheels option.
